Sokoto Govt to Establish Community Farms in LGs
Gov. Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto State has said that the government would soon establish five community farms in each of the state's 23 local government areas. Wamakko, who announced this when he was inspecting the Wurno Irrigation Scheme, said that the state government would continue to give priority attention to irrigation farming. ``We will give all the necessary support, including fertilisers and other farm inputs, to the farms,'' he said, adding that adequate resources would be earmarked for the farming projects to ensure their sustainability.

He stressed that food security was crucial to the sustenance of peace and security in the country, adding that the agricultural sector should be accorded priority as was the case in the early 60s. The governor also directed the Ministry of Agriculture to submit to his office the cost implications of the rehabilitation of the Wurno Irrigation Scheme. Earlier, the deputy governor, Alhaji Mukhtari Shagari, who took Wamakko round the facility, stressed the need for the total rehabilitation of the irrigation scheme. Shagari, who also oversees the agriculture ministry, noted that dam and other structures of the scheme were in a "very bad shape".
