Niger Delta Crisis: Technical Committee Begins Work today
*Receives 2000Memoranda, calls for more

The chairman of the Technical Committee on the Niger Delta, Mr. Ledum Mitee, has said that the committee has received over 2000 memoranda, which it intends to work with, pointing out that there is need for more Niger Delta people to come forward with their memorandum in order to make their job easy. `Mitee, who was responding to questions from journalists in Port Harcourt, said that the committee would start work as stipulated by their mandate.

"We say members of the committee would do their very best to come out with an acceptable document that if well implemented, would guarantee the development of Niger Delta," He stated. The Ogoni-born environmental activist, who doubles as the president of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), assured that the committee will not lose focus on the fundamental issues of survival surrounding the Niger Delta question, promising that every memorandum will be given attention, as they are components of inputs for the expected documents for the sustainable development of the troubled region.

According to Mitee, the formation of the committee was an opportunity for Niger Delta people to make input in the document that will usher in a sustainable development of the region. On whether the committee will meet the deadline set for them by the presidency, he explained that the enormity of the task before them will determine the deadline as they are interested in quality work that will attract positive comment from Nigerians of all shades of opinion. He promised that the report of the committee will be accepted by both Niger Delta people and the global community, especially development agencies from developed nations of the world.
