Gen Malu Flown Abroad for Treatment
Former Chief of Army Staff, Gen.
Victor Malu was yesterday flown abroad for treatment following his worsening
health condition at the Lagos University Teaching hospital (LUTH). Malu,
who had been hospitalised since Sept. 25, was flown aboard a chartered
Learjet air ambulance with registration mark D-CAPO at 9.15 a.m. yesterday.
We gathered that the former army chief was on life support as he was being
moved aboard the aircraft by military and medical personnel. He was conveyed
from the LUTH to the airport in an ambulance belonging to the Nigerian
Army Medical Corps (NAMC). Our correspondent reports that a team of medical
personnel, who were said to have come in from France on Saturday night,
supervised his movement from the hospital to the airport.
Many senior army chiefs, officials from the Presidency and family members
were on hand at the airport to see the ailing general off and to wish
him well. Malu, who was the commander of the Economic Community of West
Africa Peace Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) between 1996 and 1998, is diabetic.
