Commissioner Lauds COE Academic Union ... Jonathan, Others Honoured
Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Prof Israel Owate, has lauded the Academic Staff Union of the Rivers State College of Education, Port Harcourt for the recent award conferred on some personalities in the state for their contributions to humanity. Speaking at the College Auditorium recently, Prof Owate, who was the Chairman of the occasion was represented by the Director of Higher Education in the Ministry, Henachor Ogbonda Henachor, reminded the awardees that the honour was in recognition of their selfless services to humanity and urged members of the society to continue to recognize excellence.

The Commissioner commended the initiative of the organizers and congratulated the awardees, while expressing the hope that the honour would spur them to give more to the society. Also speaking, the Acting Provost of the College, Prof (Mrs) Rosemund Osah Ogulu, who reiterated the role of the College as a teacher training institution, thanked the state government in its role in the growth of the College and appealed for more attention to enable it meet its task of training quality manpower for the education sector in the state. She also commended the River State COEASU for the initiative, promising that the next edition would be better organized and congratulated the awardees.

She pointed out that they were recognized because of their services to mankind. Earlier, the Chairman of the institution's chapter of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, Dr Ugochukwu Agi, who emphasized the role of teachers in nation building, calls for more infrastructure in the College. He enumerated the contributions of the institution to the manpower development of Rivers State. Agi noted the significance of the occasion being the first to be organized by the institution, and appealed to the awardees to have the College at heart.

In their separate speeches, some of the awardees said they were encouraged by the honour done them by the institution and promised to render whatever assistance they could to the College. Those honoured were the Vice President of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Jonathan and Chief John Akiri, (both former lecturers at the College) Others were Chief Sunday Nwankwo, Chief Andrew Uchendu, Prof. Addision Mark Wokocha, former Provost of the College, Hon. Kerian Wobodo, High Chief Ozurumba Wagbara, among others.
