Floats Airline
The Imo Government has floated a Clean and Green Airline, called "Air
Midwest Limited." Gov. Ikedi Ohakim made this known in Owerri on Friday
while addressing the annual Imo Stakeholders Forum. He said that the government
floated the Airline in conjuction with other investors and it would be
based at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri.
"This investment is expected to stimulate activities at Sam Mbakwe Airport,
provide employment and above all, make Imo more air accessible from Abuja
and Lagos," Ohakim added. Ohakim said that the government signed a Memorandum
of Understanding (MOU) with an American company, last year under which
the company would invest N48 billion in Imo on a refinery and petrochemical
project.
"This is another major project with the capacity of providing jobs for
our teeming youths," he said. Ohakim said the Imo Job Centre and Finishing
School had placed more than 500 graduates in various jobs within one year.
He added that 68 graduates who went through the finishing school would
pass out on Jan. 9. "These graduates were, for five weeks, tutored in
computer skills, writing skill, confidence building, personal marketing
skill and other rudiments that make them competitive in the job market,"
he said.
On education, Ohakim said that the government had continued to provide
conducive learning environment by rehabilitating 35 secondary schools
spread across the three senatorial zones in Imo. "The rehabiliatation
and re-equipping of the schools to standards will cost more than N50 billion.
Ohakim also said that the government disbursed about N200 million for
the accreditation of vital courses in Imo State University, Owerri, and
the final accreditation of the College of Medicine of the university.
"We also disbursed N90 million for the accreditation of subjects by NABTEB.
"We recruited 50 technical teachers for the four technical colleges in
the state," Ohakim said.
